Maquiavel é um autor clássico da Ciência Política e um de seus precursores, pois sugeriu uma nova forma de analisar a política: análise das formas concretas da ação política, isto é, ver a política como ela é e não como deveria ser. Para isso, Maquiavel rompe com escritores anteriores que tratavam do vir a ser da política, como, por exemplo, Erasmo de Roterdã, que escreveu Manual do perfeito príncipe cristão.
Na sua obra, Maquiavel faz uma descrição, ao invés de uma prescrição. Assim, ele propõe a noção moderna de objetividade científica e analisa a política de acordo com a disposição dos atores políticos e suas ações. E convém ressaltar que Maquiavel trabalha muitas idéias práticas, mas não se restringe a idéias morais.
